Musty smells are usually caused by mold growth, which occurs in the right conditions. These conditions of temperature and humidity cause the musty smells. Besides the obvious odor, visible signs of mold growth are brown or white mildew stains on the wood framing in the crawl space.
The two most well-known causes of earthy, musty smells - geosmin and 2 methyl isoborneol - can be produced by blue-green algae and actinomycetes. Other compounds, such as isopropylmethoxypyrazine, isobutylmethoxypyrazine, and trichloroanisoles can also cause earthy musty smells.
If there are musty smells in the carpet, it may mean that the carpet has been damaged because of moisture. If the musty smells are due to damaged carpet, you may want to replace the carpet and reduce the amount of moisture accumulating in the basement, thus reducing musty smells.
